Twins in the news

For some reason, I'm now becoming very attuned to stories about twins.

Two have struck me in the past couple of days (although neither of them directly relate to our little geminals).

First was that story last week about the conjoined twins, and their mother's poem to them. The no-longer-conjoined boys appear to be doing well, although I notice that today there's controversy that money from a documentary being made about the operation might be used to cover the cost of the operation itself. Not so, say the family - they just want to make a film that will help the parents of future conjoined twins. I don't see a problem with it doing both. The operation probably cost a huge amount of money, and subsequent parents will want to know as much as possible.

The other story, more heartbreaking, is about the Polish president who died in the plane crash at the weekend. He had a twin, Jaroslaw, who had been the Polish prime minister for some of the same time as Lech was president, and who may now stand for the vacant presidency. The Times story today highlights the surviving twin's grief.

On a slightly more removed note, but staying with that story - what a great plot for a novel. The whole of a country's elite wiped out, a twin left behind. Life is once more proving as complicated as fiction.

Go on, tell me what you think
